Bring Your Own Protein

We’re vegetarian, but most of our extended family members aren’t. So at some of our potluck gatherings where there will be meat and a bunch of side dishes, we’re instructed: “bring your own protein.” Here’s a recipe BlackLion came up with to take along to a recent event. One of the available side dishes was vegetable fried rice, so we served it over that. It was delicious! (To understand the punny title of the recipe, say it out loud).

Oooh Mommy Tempeh
by BlackLion

3 packages tempeh, sliced into chunks
3-4 cloves garlic, crushed
1 med. onion, diced
¼ c. peanut oil
1 c. water
¼ c. soy sauce
¼ c. Bragg’s Amino Acids
1 tsp. sage
½ tsp. marjoram
½ tsp. ground rosemary
½ tsp. onion powder
½ tsp. garlic powder
½ tsp. thyme
1/8 tsp. black pepper

In a large frying pan, sauté the tempeh, onion, and garlic in the peanut oil. Mix the remaining ingredients in a bowl, then pour it over the tempeh. Let simmer for 15 minutes. Serve over rice or noodles.
